Listening To The Land Part 1 - Medicine Journey

I visited my friend Jude over the summer and told her I was wondering how harmonium would sound with my flutes. Beautiful synchronicity as it just so happened that she bought a harmonium in India many years ago. She hadn’t played it for years and she was very happy to lend it to me. I was very excited to bring this beautiful instrument home and have a play and found it blended beautifully with the flutes.

My father passed 5 years ago around the time I borrowed the harmonium and wrote this piece of music. This tune celebrates his life and his passing onto a new realm.

This piece of music honours strength, honesty, presence and faith. A letting go and deepening into the heart of what truly matters. We meet each other on the path and for a while we walk together. New paths appear along the journey. Always the option to choose a different path. And on we walk.

Letting go of endings to birth in the new

To bring a blessing for the grief

Sitting under the cherry tree at the centre of the young orchard. Cherry, apple, pear and plum. A quiet space to play flute and meditate. To be with friends in spirit as they visit land with a view to living and growing and being in harmony with nature.

Sacred reciprocity

We all find ways to soothe our souls. For some it might be medication, drugs and alcohol...for others it might be playing music or walking in nature or connecting with like minded beings. We are all searching for ways to connect to source. To the divine. To love. It’s not always easy to embrace the wilderness and we each have to find our own way to navigate it. Sometimes it might be as simple as baking a potato for someone you love just to bring a warm gentle nourishing moment in the midst of chaos.

We harvested the squash and pumpkins and discovered some more potatoes buried in the soil. We weeded and dug over the bed by the curly kale to make space to plant garlic.

This community garden is a haven.

That night I was thinking about loved ones who are deeply suffering. The realisation that sometimes there is nothing we can do to help can be so difficult to accept.

I wrote this tune after finding solace in the morning soil.

We may not always be able to save our family, our friends or the world but we can LOVE this Living Earth with all our hearts.

Some journeys take us on a physical path through landscapes of trees and buildings, mountains and motorways, rivers and tunnels. Some take us on the inner realm of our own beings where we discover another universe is speaking to us. It can at times be a dark, intense and frightening place and then by some miracle a light gentle heart opening blissful moment of joy comes to soothe the soul.

To rest under the trees at sun set

let golden light caress and soothe

as day dreams into night.

After writing this song I woke up the next morning to the sound of humming. A beautiful bumble bee had found its way in!
